Mavericks Breeze Past Cyclones
In their second away game of the weekend the Moose Jaw Midget A Mavericks managed to easily defeat the Southwest Midget Cyclones 10 to 1 on Saturday evening in Gull Lake.
The Mavericks were led by team leading points getter Sidney Ellingson who had a four point evening with a hat trick and an assist.
The first period saw the Cyclones able to keep up to the Mavericks with the teams recording a goal each.
Ellingson opened up the scoring at the 6:29 mark assisted by Makayla Anderson and Kaelyn Logan.
The Cyclones would however tie the game while on the powerplay at the 4:49 mark on a goal by Sydney Murphy assisted by Bryden Tremere and Callie Bye.
Shots on goal were tied with each side recording six shots each.
The second period saw more wide open play which helped the Mavericks take control and never look back as they scored four unanswered goals. Penalties hurt the Gull Lake team as the powerful Moose Jaw powerplay kicked into gear and the Mavericks were able to score on all three powerplay opportunities in the period.
Ellingson would score on the powerplay at the !5:47 mark assisted by Brooklyn Nimegeers and Ember DuSomme.
Anderson would score at the 13:17 mark assisted by team captain Kaelyn Logan.
Nimegeers would notch a powerplay goal at the 8:35 mark assisted by Taryn Sandbeck.
Logan would score a powerplay goal with 5:02 left in the second period assisted by Ellingson.
Shots on goal for the second period were 14 for the Mavericks and three for the Cyclones.
The third period saw the Mavericks continue to wrack up goals as they scored five times during the period.
Kami Schumack scored at the 17:26 mark assisted by Nikita Halyk.
The Cyclones then changed goaltenders with Jenae Robertson stepping into the net at the 17:26 mark replacing Tori Bakken. After allowing in two goals Bakken was replaced by Robertson who rejoined the Cyclones on the ice.
Ellingson would score her hat trick goal at the 15:54 mark assisted by Anderson and Lindsey Daniel.
Ashley Breitkreuz would score two unassisted goals - the first at the 15:16 mark and then just over three minutes later at the 12:03 mark.
Nimegeers would round out the scoring unassisted at the 9:03 mark.
Shots in the third period were 10 to 8 in the Mavericks favour with the Mavericks outshooting the Cyclones 30 to 17.
The Mavericks next game is January 23rd as the Wood River Ice Cats will be in Moose Jaw for a rematch of Friday evening’s game.
