Mavericks Freeze The Ice Cats
It may have been bitterly cold evening outside but it did little to slow the Moose Jaw Modget A Mavericks down as they started out the year with their hottest game so far this season shutting out the Wood River Ice Cats 16 - 0 in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action Friday evening.
Playing on the road in Lafleche the Mavericks were lead by Sidney Ellingson who had seven points (three goals and four assists and Ember DuSomme who had a six point night (four goals and two assists). Only one Maverick did not get a point in the game but it was not goaltender Schay Camphaug who recorded an assist on the final goal.
The one bright spot for the Ice Cats is they did not allow the Mavericks to score a powerplay goal on the two opportunities presented to them.
The first period saw the Mavericks score seven goals.
Eowyn Stokes scored at the 18:45 mark assisted by DuSomme.
DuSomme would score two unassited goals at 18:11 and 14:25 to give the Mavericks a three goal lead.
Makayla Anderson, who is having a great season after returning to hockey after a major injury sidelined her in the 2018 - 2019 campaign, scored at 7:05 assisted by Ellingson.
Taylor Luciak would score at the 5:53 mark assisted by DuSomme and and Stokes.
Anderson added her second goal at 4:21 assisted by Kaelyn Logan and Ellingson.
Brooklyn Nimegeers would round out the first period scoring at the 2:40 mark assisted by Ashley Breitkreuz and Kami Schumack.
The second period scoring opened with Anderson scoring her hat trick goal unassisted at 16:09.
At 13:42 Breitkreuz would score assisted by team penalty leader Nikita Halyk and Schumack. Halyk, who is playing more intensive disciplined hockey, managed to stay out of the box.
At 12:25 Mattea May scored assisted by Ellingson and Kaelyn Logan.
Ellingson would score again assisted by Halyk at the 2:45 mark.
The third period saw DuSomme score at 15:35 assisted by Taryn Sandbeck.
Ellingson would score her second goal at 11:29 assisted by Lindsay Daniel.
DuSomme would notch her fourth goal at 7:56 assited by Ellingson.
Assistant captain Courtney Botterill scored unassisted at the 4:31 mark.
The Mavericks 16th goal came at the 2:27 mark as Ellingson recorded her hat trick assisted by Anderson and goaltender Camphaug.
Camphaug would stop 14 shots on her route to a shutout versus the Wood River goaltender who faced 38 shots from the Moose Jaw squad.
The win temporarily puts the Mavericks two points behind the league leading East Coast Fillies.
The Mavericks next game is Saturday evening versus the Southwest Cyclones.
