Midget A Mavericks Clip Gold Wings For A Second Time
For a second time this season the league leading Moose Jaw Midget A Mavericks have defeated the Southeast Gold Wings 5 - 1 in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action at Midale on Friday evening.
It was a game the Moose Jaw squad needed to win in order to remain two points up on the Leroy based East Central Fillies who have one game in hand. The Fillies skated to a 5-5 tie with the Saskatoon Comet Rush on Friday evening.
The Gold Wings were the first to strike at the 14:37 mark of the first period when Presleigh Runge scored on Maverick’s goaltender Sydnee Christmann. Assisting on the goal was Paige Anderson.
Moose Jaw got on the scoreboard on the Holy Grail of Hockey on a penatly shot at the 10:11 mark of the first period when Sidney Ellingson made a great move on Gold Wings goaltender Aaliyah McLean and found the twine.
The Mavericks scored what would turn out to be the game winner at the 14:49 mark of the second period on an unassisted goal by Ashley Breitkreuz.
Moose Jaw would score what would turn out to be the insurance marker on the power play at the 9:09 mark of the third period when Brooklyn Nimegeers put it behind McLean with assists going to Ellingson and Courtney Botterill.
The fourth Moose Jaw tally came less than a minute later at the 8:51 mark when Kami Schumack scored assisted by Nikita Halyk and Botterill.
Botterill would add her third point of the evening a goal when she scored unassisted at the 6:35 mark to round out the scoring.
The late third period would be one of frustation for the Gold Wings as they took four of their eight penalties including a misconduct on a checking from behind penalty in the last three minutes and ten seconds of the game. Moose Jaw had a total of six penalties throughout the game.
The Mavericks play their next two games on the road next weekend in Saskatoon.
