Mavericks Pick Off Two More Weekend Wins In Saskatoon

It was another successful weekend as the winningest hockey team in the city the Moose Jaw Midget A Mavericks recorded two more big wins in Saskatoon over the weekend. The pair of wins leave the Midget A Mavericks with a 10 win and one loss record for the season in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action.

Mavericks - 3 at Saskatoon Comet Predators - 2

Despite having a seemingly shooting fest of shots in their Friday evening 3 - 2 victory over the Saskatoon Comet Predators the Moose Jaw squad found themselves up against some tough competition and strong goaltending.

The Mavericks outshot the Comet Predators 44 to 11 in a game where the home Saskatoon team took eight penalties versus one penalty assessed to the visiting Moose Jaw team.

The first period would see the third place Comet Predators take a 2 - 0 lead against the Mavericks.

Ksenia Bodnarchuk would open the scoring within the first minute of play scoring on Mavericks goaltender Schay Campaugh at the 19':05 mark assisted by Trinidy Neapatung.

Just over a minute later the Saskatoon team added to their lead when Shea Brittan scored at the 17:53 mark assisted by Dylan King.

Moose Jaw would not however allow the Saskatoon team to skate away with the win and started a comeback in the first period.

Sidney Ellingson scored an unassisted powerplay goal at the 13:33 mark.

A second unassisted goal was added at the 10:00 minute mark by Brooklyn Nimegeers to tie the game.

Mattea May would score the game winner unassisted at 17:59 of the second period.

The third period saw five penalties assessed - four to Saskatoon and one to Moose Jaw - including a four minute manor assessed to the Comet Predator’s Jessica Gregor at the 00:00 mark or when time was expired as Saskatoon tried to tie the game.

Mavericks - 7 at Saskatoon Comet Rush - 4

The Mavericks continued to outshoot their opponents as they faced a second Saskatoon squad on Saturday managing to outshoot the hometown team 49 - 19 in a 7 - 4 Mavericks victory.

Special teams figured heavily in first period action as the majority of the goal scoring was when either team was on the powerplay.

The Mavericks Eowyn Stokes opened the scoring on the powerplay at the 16:28 mark assisted by Taylor Luciak.

Eowyn Stokes would add her second goal unassisted at the 15:22 mark.

The Mavericks would take a three goal lead on the powerplay when Brooklyn Nimegeers scored at the 10:07 mark assisted by Mavericks’ point leader Makayla Anderson.

The Comet Rush woould get on the scoreboard on a powerplay goal by Jade Weber assisted by Payton Unger at the 2:36 mark.

Aimee Rivard from the Comet Rush would score on the powerplay with 23 secinds left in the period assisted by Cadence Arno.

The second period would see Saskatoon tie the game a three goals each when Jodi Christensen scored at the 17:06 mark of the second period assisted by Megan Doucette.

Saskatoon would take the lead at the 16:11 mark as Bailey Sawatzky scored assisted by Reese Stevens.

Moose Jaw would tie the game at 4 -4 on a Courtney Botterill powerplay marker at the 11:51 mark assisted by Anderson.

The eventual game winner for the Mavericks was scored at 5:40 by Ember DuSomme assisted by Sidney Ellingson to give the Mavericks a 5 -4 lead over top of the Comet Rush heading into the second intermission.

The third period would see the Mavericks’ Ellingson score at the 12:42 mark on the powerplay assisted by Taryn Sandbeck.

Ellingson would add another marker for the Mavericks at the 4:52 mark of the third period assisted by DuSomme.

The Mavericks next home game is scheduled for December 21st at 2:45 pm at the Bert Hunt Arena as they face the high flying Leroy based East Central Fillies, who are the only team to defeat the Mavericks so far this season, in a game which could decide the eventual league regular season standings.
