You may have never heard the name Reuben & The Dark before but if you watch enough YouTube you might be one of 15 million plus viewers who inadvertently heard their song "Black Water" when it was used in the gritty trailer for Netflix's Breaking Bad spin-off movie, El Camino.
Reuben Bullock, the Reuben in Reuben & The Dark attributes the Breaking Bad thing to magic (of the dark variety, no doubt).
"You never really know how that stuff comes together" he said, adding "They found the song. The song was perfect for the trailer. It was very surreal to watch it."
The rest of his bandmates are Shea Alain, Brock Geiger, Ian Jarvis and Dino Soares
Reuben and the band signed with Arts & Crafts back in 2013. For those who don't know, Arts & Crafts is a rare gem amongst Canada's popular recording labels. They've produced records for Gord Downie before, as well as the best of the best of Canadian indie music: Feist, Broken Social Scene, Dan Mangan and Stars. Not bad company for this skater kid from Calgary with a mournful croon.
Reuben & The Dark have been compared to Bright Eyes, Vance Joy and Mumford & Sons for their chilling and contemplative take on indie rock and modern folk.
It's music that you could play for a lover to soften the mood. It's music you could play in the background while having supper and wine. It's music you could Google the lyrics too and sing along, trying to hit all the tough notes Reuben manages to hit. But it's music with haunting feel that's perfect for Halloween. And, on account of he's gonna be here on the same weekend people are going to be celebrating Halloween, it's a fantastic opportunity to turn this into a creepy, folk-noir Halloween costume party.
The band has been hard at work, putting the finishing touches on their third full-length album un | love; which, strangely enough, will be officially released on October the 25th (the day before their Moose Jaw show). So it's likely they'll have some copies at their merch table.
About un | love, Reuben says the title can "be interpreted any way you like".
He also says that un | love was reflected in their approach to making the album; he added, "challenging an understanding. Finding a perspective to be able to see things differently".
The first release off of un | love was a song called "faultline" for which they just filmed a video for.
"We made that video in Mixart Studios in Montreal" Reuben said. "That was the room we recorded most of the album in. Working with Brock Mitchell is always a treat. It turns into very longs days full of laughter."
