Overcoming Difficult Times Highlight of Mayor's Annual Address
Overcoming obstacles to make Moose Jaw a better place was the main message as Mayor Frasier Tolmie stood up and gave his annual New Year's Address to Council and a crowd largely made up of Moose Jaw Rotary Club members.
The Mayor’s address is given annually at the first Council meeting of the year and it looks back at the previous year and it’s accomplishments as well as a look forward to where the City of Moose Jaw is headed.
“Persevering in challenging times takes great determination” Mayor Tolmie said.
“The challenges of this city cannot be overcome without a clear goal and a clear,” the Mayor stated, adding “the challenges we faced are enormous.”
Mayor Tolmie spoke about inviting many citizens to be involved in strategic planning for the community and where it is headed.
“This was all done collaboratively.”
The Mayor focused upon the accomplishments of the Moose Jaw and District where ad a record 465 people attend their business excellence awards.
Gibson's Energy's s of investing 20 – 25 million to increase their production by 18 percent was highlighted by Mayor Tolmie.
Doepker Industries being almost wiped out and returning now to almost full capacity was a major highlight.
The proposed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle program by Sask Polytechnic was seen as a positive in a changing world helping with agriculture, pipelines and security.
“Having Council and Administration working together benefits everyone in our community,” he said.
Having a full-time economic development officer pursuing opportunity was key for the Mayor in promoting the economic growth and development of the city as a whole.
The announcement of the $700 million natural gas generating station was a key economic development to end the year, Mayor Tolmie stated.
“Exciting things do happen in the City of Moose Jaw, he said.
New city programs and modernization was helping to create new efficiencies.
The community of Moose Jaw was portrayed as one having a heart with $8,000 raised in an exhibition volleyball event for Riverside Mission, a donation of $2.5 million by Mosaic to Saskatchewan charities including four in Moose Jaw were two listed examples given by the Mayor.
“2019 will be a year to build on a strong foundations of the previous year's hard work,” Mayor Tolmie concluded.
