Angie Abdou, the highly respected author, originally from Moose Jaw, has released her latest book, Home Ice: Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom.
The book, her sixth, is a combination of personal stories with deep and cautious research on things such as cost, gender bias, living with head injuries and family pressures. The book is centered on being a mom with a child growing up playing organized hockey.
Angie admits that her attitude towards hockey culture was by growing up in the thick of the Graham James Era.
This isn't the first time Angie has written about sports. Sports fiction is one of her strong suits. Her book The Bone Cage (2007) was a critical success and is an all-time Canadian classic about athletes attempting to qualify for the Olympics. It was a finalist for Canada Reads in 2011.
Angie, who now calls Fernie, BC, home was in Moose Jaw this summer for the 2018 Saskatchewan Festival of Words, where she took part in a long-form interview with Karl Subban, the charismatic and passionate father of 3 black NHL stars (PK, Malcolm and Jordan), who published a book detailing how he aided his children to success.
At the Festival of Words she presented from her 2017 novel, In Case I Go. A controversial story about a boy haunted by the mistakes of his ancestors. She also played on the team that won gold at the literary trivia night competition at Bobby's Place.
