Landfill Fee Waived for Fall Cleanup

Residents of Moose Jaw have until the end of the month to take advantage of free landfill access as part of an annual Fall cleanup.

The waving of the $10 landfill fee runs this year from October $15 - 31st. The Fall cleanup was moved two weeks to the last half of October when Councillor Dawn Luhning made a motion in Executive Committee to better facilitate residents after the leaves had fallen.

“The $10 fee is waived for general household and yard / garden waste,” Craig Hemmingway Communications Director said.

“Any load in a half ton truck or smaller can be eligible to have the $10 fee waived. All trailers are weighed in and out and are required to pay by weight,” Hemmingway said.

Cars pulling utility trailers will also have to weigh in and weigh out and then pay the appropriate fee, he said.

The City asks people follow all of the rules when transporting to the landfill.

“Loads must come out tarped. Everyone must report to the scale house. Please Obey all site signs and only deposit in an area where you a directed too by the Landfill personnel.”

Although it may look like the City is breaking it’s policy of waste diversion through recycling and composting that is not the case.

“Landfill diversion is critical to extending the life of our current site,” Hemmingway said adding “it is encouraged any materials that can be recycled are diverted properly, which can mean either: utilizing backyard composters, your residential curbside recycling cart and the bulk recycling bins located east of 1010 High Street West.”

Even if recyclables are taken to the landfill as part of this clean up “Scrap Metal, Automotive Batteries, Propane tanks, Automotive Oil, Filters & Containers as well as Antifreeze all have specific diversion areas within the landfill.”
