Report On City’s Next Moves On New Landfill Within The Next Two Months

And when will we know?

Are the two big questions when it comes to the location of Moose Jaw’s new landfill.

But at least one of them can be answered.

The question should be answered within the next two months.

During the post Council media scrum city manager Maryse Carmichael was asked about the timing of any more information on the City’s plans and what those plans will be.

The only answer Carmichael gave for sure was there would be a report back to Council within the next two months.

What the recommendations of that report will be the City Manager was tight lipped about. But there is a lot of work still ongoing behind the scenes.

“Council is aware of the RM’s decision. And as I mentioned last week we have three project teams currently working on the current landfill and two that are working on the future. So within the next two months we will get back to Council,” she said.

Carmichael made no indication as to which way, if any, Administration is leaning follow the denial of a discretionary use application from the RM of Moose Jaw.

The reason why Administration must now prepare a report is that in a June 18th vote the RM of Moose Jaw vote to reject a discretionary use application to establish a landfill.

The proposed new 390 acre landfill was to be located approximately just over one mile north of the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and 9th Avenue NW.

The proposed new landfill location met massive opposition by nearby landowners and ratepayers in the RM.

The City has not ruled out annexation of the land in order to move the proposed new site within city limits and out of the RM’s jurisdiction in order to develop the proposed landfill on the property the City once had an option on.
