City Announces 2022 Municipal Heritage Award Winners

The City recently handed out its 2022 Municipal Heritage Awards.

Here are the five recipients in four different categories.

Restoration Award- Brent Boechler Gold Key Investments, Inc. 44 Fairford St. W.

This building was constructed in 1953 and was home to the Times-Herald.

The new owner has done extensive renovations but has protected the heritage value by leaving the front façade untouched and had a new marquis constructed to resemble the previous signage.

Stewardship Award (Two Winners)

1 -Mad 24 Restaurant (formerly National Café) 24 Main St. N. After Rene and Rosalie Marcil closed the doors to the National Café they made the decision to keep the iconic sign in Moose Jaw even after buyers had reached out.

2 - Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Moose Jaw Campus building, 600 Saskatchewan Street W. Formerly known as STI, the educational institution took over the building on Sept.15th, 1959 and provides technology, industrial, apprenticeship, unemployed training and upgrading programs.

Their educational offerings have grown significantly since then, but their building has remained a constant fixture on Saskatchewan Street.

Advocacy/Heritage Education Award- St. Joseph’s Parish Catholic Women’s League. 2022 marked the Centennial of Moose Jaw’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Women’s League and to celebrate they hosted a summer tea which featured over 80 wedding, baptism and first communion gowns dating back to 1895.

The event featured a fashion show and slide show of weddings and gowns dating back to 1935 and many of the brides we able to attend the tea in person.

Collection of Distinction – 1000 block of Connaught Avenue (East Side). The block known as the Ten Commandments is a group of 10 identical single-family dwellings with similar front facades.

Though they all have the same floor plan, each homeowner has put their own mark on their home through renovations and remodeling.
